The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, in the context of the operation of the Center for China Studies, organizes a lecture on Friday 17 December 2021 at 19.00, on “”Xi Jinping’s Ecological civilisation?”: China at COP26 and beyond”.
Μain speaker is Dr. Sam Geall*, CEO of China Dialogue, Associate Fellow at Chatham House and Associate Faculty at the University of Sussex.
The event will be introduced by Dr. Konstantinos Tsimonis, Lecturer in Chinese Sociology at King’s College Lau China Institute, London.
The Chinese government has set out ambitious targets on addressing climate change, and “Ecological Civilisation” has become an important slogan for President Xi Jinping. China has demonstrated a remarkable energy transformation in its domestic market, too. But the country has also found it difficult to move away from coal-fired power, and Chinese firms, private and state-owned alike, have found an outlet for overcapacity and shrinking domestic markets by exporting carbon-intensive production overseas. China’s role at UN climate talks and beyond has become a point of contention in international discussions around climate and the environment. This talk will examine the impact, drivers and likely trajectory of China’s low-carbon development, from rhetoric to reality.
Electronic registration is OBLIGATORY here.
The lecture will be streamed live through the Foundation’s website, the Facebook page and Zoom platform.
