Focusing on the digital age and on the new technologies that brings to libraries, education and research, the long-awaited 85th World Congress of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions – IFLA on “Libraries: dialogue for change” is about to begin in Athens. This is the most important event in the field of libraries, organized by IFLA with the support of the Association of Greek Librarians and Information Scientists and the National Library of Greece. It will take place from Saturday 24th to Friday 30th August 2019 at the Athens Concert Hall and will be attended by almost 3,500 delegates from 135 countries.
The seven-day congress will be focused on issues such as the position of libraries and IFLA towards major social and economic changes, the contribution of technology to open access to information, the role of libraries in the educational process, and its development. research and science, but also in improving human life (health, life sciences). In addition, the congress’ thematic sessions are exploring the new role of librarians in promoting the research process, as well as the flexibility they now need to make available to new technological data in order to be able to interact with society through effective methods of knowledge dissemination.
On the occasion of the organization of the congress, pre-conference meetings are held nationwide, focusing on scientific library topics. Also, on August 30th, participants will have the opportunity to visit one or more of the 70 libraries in and outside Attica, which will open their doors. At the same time, there is an international exhibition of products and services related to the subject of the conference, with about 70 exhibitors, where the participants will have the opportunity to get in touch with cutting-edge technologies and look for products that will enhance their work.
The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation actively participates in the Congress. In an effort to support librarians across Greece, the Foundation covered the cost of congress registration for 90 people who were selected randomly through an online platform, after submiting applications. The Foundation’s Historical Library hosted the IFLA Satellite Workshop “Doing Research in Real-World Settings: Telling Your Story and Evaluating Programs through Social Science Research” on 22 & 23 August, information on which can be found here. Finally, among the libraries that the participants will be able to visit on August 30 is the Historical Library of the Foundation, where they will be informed about our activities and have a guided tour at the incunabula exhibition from the Foundation’s collection “One Book, Six Centuries of History “.
The conference is accompanied by cultural events of particular interest, with the participation of distinguished artists and figures (The Lykeion ton Hellenidon, Athens Philharmonic Orchestra, Sofia Spyratou, Estoudiantina). There will also be calligraphy, bookbinding activities as well as an interactive art performance called METALIBRARY.
The conference is being held for the first time in Greece and its organization is supported by the City of Athens Culture, Sports and Youth Organization (OPANDA), with the contribution of around 250 volunteers.
Lead donor to the Congress is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which together with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center will offer the event of 27th August.
