The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation presents for the first time on the internet the website Travelogues: Travellers’ Views, a groundbreaking project on the most significant travellers’ editions, concerning the Greek world.
The website contains important iconographic material from travellers’ books from the 15th to the 19th centuries. These editions depict and describe various visual themes: ancient monuments, modern cities, manners and customs of each of the ethnic groups involved, as well as scenes of everyday life in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region and Southeast Europe.
A large team of academics has worked on the study, indexing, documentation and digitization of this huge volume of material (more than 6,000 publications and over 15,000 images), in order to provide the user with all possible information. This valuable data, sorted into categories, is made available to academia and research, both Greek and international, and it is also accessible by the general public to be used primarily as educational visual material.
The Travelogues website is dynamic: it is continuously updated with newly processed material, also taking into account user comments, corrections and improvements.
