Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation and The New Raw Research & Design studio present Second Nature, an innovative Research & Design project that aims to propose solutions to enironmental issuses with the aid of 3D printing technology.
Second Nature re-imagines an ecosystem where marine plastic is the raw material for a new economy that uses technological and cultural innovation to bring about social change. The potentials of this new logic can be explored through innovative projects, such as developing a collection of digitally crafted seashells and objects, made from locally sourced ghost nets and produced through the use of digital design and fabrication technologies.
The Symposium “Second Nature. Marine Plastic Waste – Blue & Circular Economy – New Technologies” took place on Thursday 24 May and hosted distinguished speakers from Greece and abroad, scientists and experts on environmental issues, circular economy and technology. The Symposium was held at the Historical Library of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation (2nd Merarchias 36, Piraeus).
During the Symposium, the first screening of the short documentary “Second Nature”, filmed by Academy Award Nominee Daphne Matziaraki took place.
The exhibition “Second Nature – A New Life” has been inaugurated on the same evening, presenting a collection of 3D printed seashells – symbols of marine beauty and cleanness – as well as a 3D printed table and stool that aimed to raise awareness for sustainability and the need to address the major environmental problem of plastic waste. These products are all digitally crafted from upcycled marine plastic with 3D printing, offering a sustainable solution through the use of recycling. The exhibition remained open until 10 June 2018.
Primary school students have had the opportunity to get familiar with 3D printing technology on Friday 25 May. With the help of the architects who run the New Raw Research & Design studio based in Rotterdam, Panos Sakkas and Fotini Setaki, the children were informed about the marine pollution caused by the ghost nets and their transformation to 3D printers filament. On Saturday 26 May, the Historical Library’s garden was open to visitors of all ages and New Raw team introduced them to circular economy and 3D printing.
