The Healthy Seas initiative together with diving partners Ghost Fishing and Atlantis Dive Center, have removed a huge ghost net from the depths of the Aegean Sea which was spotted during recent survey dives With the help of local fishermen, the lost fishing gear will be safely recovered from the areas.
Pierre-Yves Cousteau described the diving mission in live stream from above and beneath the waves and answered the audience’s questions, sent to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using #SaveYourBreath.
This was the first ever lost or abandoned fishing gear clean up action at the location which will become the Santorini Marine Protected Area, a project initiated by Cousteau Divers in 2010. In this way we have helped to raise awareness and contribute to a swift and well-placed designation. Read more here
The fishnets collected will first be cleaned, sorted and afterwards delivered to Aquafil’s plant in Slovenia, where they will be transformed into ECONYL® regenerated nylon for brand new textiles products, such as swimwear.
The event was under the auspices of Thera Municipality and Goulandris Natural History Museum and is exclusively sponsored by Carvico.
