The heirs of Georgios Stringos, Agni Stringou-Bouropoulou and Georgios Stringos, her nephew and the son of Dimitrios, donated to the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation almost all of the furniture from the Stringos Mansion, which had served as Georgios’ residence. They also donated a significant number of books from Georgios Stringos’ library, primarily on historical and political subjects.

Biography

Georgios Stringos (1878-1956) was a merchant, banker, shipbroker, and politician. He was born in Kranidi, Ermioni, and grew up in Piraeus. Despite significant financial difficulties he finished high school and enrolled in the Law School of Athens, but was forced to abandon his studies, seeking immediate professional prospects. He was employed at the Bank of Athens and, thanks to his professional experience, his connections with the commercial and financial world of Piraeus, and his dynamic personality, he established himself as a prominent figure in the business world of the early 20th century. In collaboration with the merchant Ioannis Frangkiadis, he founded the company Frangkiadis, Stringos & Co. In 1913, he left the company due to differing opinions and started his own business. Subsequently, he, along with members of the Empeirikos family, founded the Empeirikos-Stringos Bank. He was actively involved in politics, serving as a municipal councilor of Piraeus, a member of parliament for Piraeus with the Venizelos party, and a senator. He was a founding member and president of the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a member of the board of the National Bank of Greece, and a founding member and board member of the Hellenic Maritime Museum in Piraeus. He was also a collector of significant works of art. The Stringos Mansion, one of the most beautiful neoclassical buildings in Piraeus, was purchased by the Laskaridis family in 2006 and now houses the Historical Library of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation.
