The library of lawyer Kaiti Papariga-Kostavara

The library was acquired by the Foundation in 2021 through the generous donation of her daughter. It consists of approximately 1,800 items. Their main topics are Greek history, social sciences, politics, literature, as well as a subcollection with
books about feminism and the struggle for women’s rights in the 70s and 80s. The library is accompanied by part of her archive.

Biography

Kaiti Papariga-Kostavara (1930-2016) was a lawyer and an important personality of the Greek feminist movement. She studied law in Athens, carried out postgraduate studies in Italy and France and was awarded a doctorate for her thesis on “Rape: The Crime, the Trial and Social Perceptions”. She was the coordinator of the National Observatory “for dealing with violence against women” and he the author of the first national report on the subject. She was a member of the Interministerial Committee on Combating Violence against Women (2000-2004) and the Research Committee of the European Commission on sexual harassment in the workplace, fighting for gender equality in Greece and in Europe. For many years she was the head of the Democratic Women’s Movement. She served as a consultant to many agencies and organizations for combatting violence against women. She was a frequent advocate for rape victims. She taught as a visiting professor at Panteion University. She also left an important corpus of writings on legal and feminist issues.
