The library complements the photographic collection of Michalis Tsangaris and includes albums, technical manuals, photography history handbooks, and more. It is estimated to contain around 1,500 items.

Biography

Michalis Tsangaris (1950-2020) was born on Long Island to immigrant parents of Greek descent. He grew up in Long Island and Japan. He later moved to Athens, where he attended the Leonteios School and the Athens College. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York, while also working in galleries, where his collecting interests began. He worked in shipping, initially in the USA and later in Athens. He was a prominent collector of photographs, gathering and preserving numerous images of modern Greek history from some of the most significant early photographers. The photographs in the collection span a period of 130 years and cover a wide range of subjects, including early Greek immigrants to America, wartime, historical and cultural themes, figures of the underworld, portraits, life in old Athens, and many more.
