Biography

Anthony Cutler (1934-2024) was a professor of Byzantine Art History. Born and raised in London, he studied in Cambridge, Naples and Belgrade, and completed his doctorate at Emory University in Atlanta. He joined the Pennsylvania State University in 1967, and was named an Evan Pugh University Professor in 2004. His was primarily known for his expertise in Byzantine ivory carvings, while his scholarly interests included Byzantine art and iconography, coins and manuscripts. Later in his career, Cutler began pioneering research on gift exchange between Byzantium and the Islamic world, drawing from fields such as anthropology while taking an interdisciplinary approach to cultural history. He was a prolific writer, as he authored, co-authored or co-edited 16 books and published more than 157 articles. Cutler was honored by universities and institutions all over the world. He was appointed Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University, he was awarded the François 1er Medal from the Collège de France, the Humboldt Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He held appointments as “professeur invité” at the Sorbonne and was a permanent Fellow of the Medieval Academy.
