Part of the library of Dimitrios Kalitsounakis was donated to the Historical Library by his heirs in 2025. It contains approximately 2,700 items, primarily on the subject of economics.

Biography

Dimitrios E. Kalitsounakis (1888-1982) was a lawyer and economist. He was born in Chania and studied law in Athens. He worked as a lawyer and in 1909 was awarded a doctorate in law from the University of Athens. He continued his studies in political and economic sciences at the University of Berlin. In 1920, he was appointed assistant professor of political economy at the University of Athens, and in 1923, he was elected full professor at the Higher School of Economics and Commercial Sciences (today Athens University of Economics and Business). As a professor, he also taught at the University of Athens and Panteion University. He served as Secretary General of the Ministry of National Economy (1923-1924), Deputy Minister-General Administrator of Crete and Deputy Minister of the Interior in the government of A. Papanastasiou (May-June 1932), President of the Hellenic Economic Association (1957-1965), President of the Hellenic Statistical Society (1948-1954), President of the Hellenic Productivity Center (1958-1959), and Rector of the Athens University of Economics and Business (1954-1959). Through his teaching and writing, he made a decisive contribution to the development of economic sciences in Greece. He was honored with the title of Commander of the Order of the Savior.
