The luxurious collector’s edition Karavia tou Agonos (Ships of the Revolution) stands as a distinctive artistic and historical testament to the naval dimension of the Greek War of Independence. The volume features 12 colour engravings by the painter-engraver Lykourgos Kogevinas, based on paintings by Antonios Kriezis, which in turn were based on originals by important artists. The accompanying texts were written by Dimitrios Fokas.
The collective volume includes 18th and 19th-century war ships, illuminating through art the vital contribution of the Greek fleet to the War of Independence. Among them are the Agios Nikolaos, later renamed Iraklis under the command of Andreas Miaoulis, and the legendary brig Aris, captained by Anastasis Tsamados, which entered history for its heroic breakout from Navarino in 1825.
The book was originally printed by Lykourgos Kogevinas in 1938, reprinted by Vergos Editions in 1994.
