European Day of Conservation-Restoration 2025

Our book and paper conservation lab participated again this year, for the 7th consecutive time, in the celebration of the European Day of Conservation-Restoration with a special event. On Sunday, October 19, 2025, from 12:00 to 14:00, our guests visited the premises of our Historical Library and had the opportunity to view up close an 18th-century manuscript from the Spyridon Loverdos Collection and discuss with the Head of the conservation laboratory good practices for the handling and preservation of the manuscript. What methodology does a paper conservator follow when an item comes to the laboratory? What information do they record and how? What criteria do they consider when designing the most appropriate conservation intervention program? These and many other things were discussed at this event, where the audience showed great interest and asked many questions. Afterwards, the Curators of the library’s Old and Rare Material and curators of the exhibition gave to our visitors a guided tour of the temporary exhibition “30 years, 30 books: Tiny, mighty, precious, rare”. By viewing publications linked to the traveling literature, religious writings, ancient Greek knowledge, the Enlightenment and the Greek Revolution, visitors had the opportunity to discover books with a rich history, which have passed through generations of readers and traveled through time.
