Biography

Pinelopi S. Delta (1874-1941) was a writer, daughter of Emmanouil and sister of Antonis Benakis. She was born and raised in Alexandria. She was educated within the typical framework of the time for women. She married the intellectual Stefanos Delta, through whom she became connected with the circle of the first demoticists. She was also a personal friend of Eleftherios Venizelos, whose party her father had joined. In addition to language issues, she was also involved in public affairs, helping to care for refugees from the Asia Minor catastrophe. She was one of the founding members and main financiers of the ‘Musical Folklore Archive’ (later the ‘Center for Asia Minor Studies’). In 1930, the Academy of Athens awarded her the silver medal for her entire body of work. She wrote eight children’s books, mainly on historical themes, for which she is best known, as well as 13 short stories and four other texts that are not considered children’s literature.
