Biography

Athanassios Fokas (1952) is an Academy of Athens member and Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. He is the Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation. He studied aeronautics at Imperial College London, earned a PhD in applied mathematics from the California Institute of Technology, and later studied medicine at the University of Miami. In 1986, he was appointed Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Clarkson University, in 1996 he took up the Chair of Applied Mathematics at Imperial College, and in 2002 he was appointed to the newly established “Chair of Nonlinear Mathematical Science” at the University of Cambridge. He has received numerous awards and honours, including from the London Mathematical Society, the State of New York, the Academy of Athens, the Bodossaki Foundation, and the President of the Hellenic Republic (with the cross of the Commander of the Order of the Phoenix). He is a member of many committees, holds an honourary doctorate at several universities, and has served or is serving on the editorial board of many scientific journals. He has served as President of the National Library of Greece and as an advisor to various foundations and organizations. Since 2005, he has been a regular member of the Academy of Athens. He has written various works, and ISI Web of Science lists him among the most cited mathematicians worldwide. In recognition of his scientific contributions, Clarkson University established a lecture series titled “The Fokas Distinguished Lecture Series.”
