The Velimezis Collection opens to the public with an organized tour. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the only publicized private collection of images, whose works span six centuries of artistic production, from the 15th to the 20th century.
This great collection of post-Byzantine religious art includes works that belong to the Cretan school in terms of style, such as the “Passion of Christ”, a work attributed to Domenikos Theotokopoulos, as well as works by exceptional artists, such as Angelos Pitzamanos and Emmanuel Tzane.
The richness of the collection is also evident in the number of icons that thematically and in terms of style depict the evolution of post-Byzantine painting from the 15th century onwards in Greece. Also, woodcarving works from workshops in Northern Greece, such as iconostasis archivars and sanctuary doors, as well as unique flowering objects from Chioniades of Northwestern Epirus as well as elaborate functional objects frame the collection.
