The Historical Library of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, in collaboration with Triton & Shell – Paper Art Hub, invites its younger audience to a creative workshop on handmade bookmaking.
Before the invention of printing, before printed books even existed, knowledge, memory and stories were recorded by hand, on paper that was itself made by hand.
The workshop “From Paper to the Handwritten Book” invites children and adolescents on an experiential journey into the world of paper and the handwritten book, following the basic stages of book creation as they were practiced before the invention of printing.
Through hands-on practice, observation, and creative expression, participants discover that paper is not merely a material, but a carrier of ideas, stories, and personal memory.
Session 1 — Handmade Paper
Participants are introduced to the basic principles of traditional papermaking and become familiar with the raw materials historically used to make paper. They create their own sheets of handmade paper and understand the role of water and fibers, as well as why each sheet of paper is unique.
Session 2 — Calligraphy
Using the paper they created, participants write their own short story or text. They become familiar with basic writing tools and materials and experiment with calligraphy. At the same time, they learn the fundamental principles of collating a handwritten manuscript.
Session 3 — Bookbinding
Participants learn the basic principles of bookbinding and the logic behind the structure of a book. They prepare a paper cover, fold their written pages, and bind them together by sewing, completing their own personal handwritten book.
