The library of politician Sotiris Papapolitis

The library was acquired by the Foundation in 2019 through the generous donation of his family. It consists of approximately 14,000 items mainly on the subjects of politics and history.

Biography

Sotiris Papapolitis (1942–2020) was a Greek politician and Member of Parliament. He was born in Piraeus and was the son of the former MP and Minister Savvas Papapolitis. He studied Law and Economics at the University of Athens and pursued postgraduate studies in Toronto. He was awarded the Alexander Mackenzie Scholarship as well as three additional scholarships from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities (1967–1968). He taught Classical, Modern, and Contemporary Political and Economic Theory at the School of Political Economy of the University of Toronto (1968–1969). He also taught Public International Law and International Politics, Theory of Political and Economic Development, and Ideology of Violence (revolutions, coups, terrorism, technological violence) at the Faculty of Social Sciences of York University in Canada (1969–1972). In 1963, he served as Director of the office of the Vice President of the Government and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sophoklis Venizelos. He was elected Member of Parliament for Piraeus in 1974 with the Union of the Democratic Centre (E.DI.K.) and subsequently with New Democracy. From 1975 to 1977, he served as Greece’s representative to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. In 1990, he was elected Chairman of the Standing Parliamentary Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs.
